Cinema Beans: Teddy Bear

He could probably take down your local street gang single-handedly, but the 308-lb. bodybuilding Dennis is no match for his tiny manipulative mother. Using every trick in the book—from refusing dinner to vague comparisons with an absent father—Dennis’ mother is the ultimate bully. A bully that loves Dennis, no doubt about it, as the most selfish people often mean well. As much as Teddy Bear is focused on Dennis overcoming his own bashful reservations, part of that journey entails conquering his mother’s deadly gaze, as she controls her son more iniquitously than Jackie Weaver does hers in Animal Kingdom and guilt-trips him more than Doris Roberts does Raymond in Everybody Loves Raymond. Ma-Ma may be a capital B-itch with violent tendencies, but Dennis’ mother is psychologically damaging on an intimate level, shaping the introverted, tragic centerpiece of Teddy Bear looking for an escape from home.

Ma-Ma is a bitch. She’s just...angry. Mean. Threatening. Has one dude’s eyes ripped out. She holds like...a million people hostage in a building, then has her henchman level 'sn entire floor with minigun fire. Is there anything about overriding a futuristic building’s settings so it goes into “defense mode” as it would in times of war so a million or so people are held hostage while you try to kill the cops/judges who are after you for making the latest, deadliest drug that doesn’t say “overbearing”?
