Cinema Beans: The Man with the Iron Fists
At first my obvious choice was The Dark Knight Rises. But upon contemplation...I just wasn’t excited for the third part of the trilogy everybody and their brother seems to love. Christopher Nolan is more concerned with politics, social commentary, and putting together flimsy storylines to bother caring about characterizations, and it's never been more apparent than with the egotistical Dark Knight Rises. Nolan is easily the most overrated director of our time. His best movie is Memento, and it’s still not even that great. So, in all honesty, why get excited for a film I know will disappoint me? That word: “Letdown”. I wanted The Dark Knight Rises to be great, but I wasn’t necessarily “let down” by how underwhelming it was. I get my hopes up for movies I can geek out to. Movies that will be a rockin’ good time. Those moments I can let go and say, “Fuck yeah, this is what I wanna do with a Saturday afternoon.” And what’s better than RZA, Batista, and Russel Crowe engaging in some Kung-fu battles? Right? RIGHT?!
OK, so MAYBE I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up for this heaping pile of poorly edited self-indulgence. Maybe. But The Man with the Iron Fists genuinely looked like a rockin’ good time. It had Russell Crowe in rare goofy form, Batista painted in brass, and RZA getting his arms chopped off. It was every bit as gruesome as I expected, but nowhere near as ambitious as any Tarantino film I've seen (and I've seen 'em all). Just like every other Wu-Tang outing of the last ten years, RZA left me feeling high and dry, desperate for the days when anybody from the group could produce something truly transcendent.

MMI: Prometheus
The trailer for Prometheus was so fucking cool. The music! The way the images seem to pulsate to the beat. The scale that’s shown. Then, near the end, the high-pitched sounds like an instrument moaning for help. I couldn’t wait. Absolutely. Could. Not. Wait. I went at midnight. What a disappointing way to start a day.
There are people who love this movie. I get it. There are a lot of cool things that go on. Some sweet shots. Some awesome moments. That’s what happens when you combine Ridley Scott with the co-creator of Lost. But we all know what happened to Lost. SWEET beginning, DISAPPOINTING conclusion. Have you seen Cowboys & Aliens? Some awesome moments, but disappointing. I haven’t seen Lindelof write something that didn’t have awesome aspects. But I also haven’t seen him write something that wasn’t, ultimately, disappointing. “What’s so disappointing about Prometheus?” Stupid decision making and poor dramatization of answers to larger questions. If you watch 2001: a space odyssey, you see a movie that doesn’t tell you answers. What’s it do instead? Show you answers. It can do this because Kubrick and Clarke KNEW what was going on, so knew what they could omit in order to make the movie mysterious and what they could keep to make sure it still made sense. I don’t know if Lindelof thinks this far ahead. I think he thinks in mysteries first and tries to discover answers later. I don’t think answers interest him as much as mysteries. And I think this lack of developing a COMPLETE story is why everything he has worked on, thus far, has been disappointing. Maybe the new Star Trek movie will be different? But I know it scares me when I see his name attached to projects.
