Cinema Beans: Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II
Is this the part where I hand in my Cinephile Card? I hope not, because the second part of Breaking Dawn was easily some of the most fun I've had at the movies this year. Bill Condon took a C-novel and made it into a B-movie that's a grade-A good time. The first five minutes of the film are seriously some of the most goofily ambitious material I've seen this year, and the film continues a striking dedication to senses and their grasp over the individual. Plus there's plenty of ludicrousness to fill in those gaping ideological holes and the instances (as seen in the other films) of utter boredom due to, errr, having absolutely nothing interesting to say. And it's got one of the most shocking twists in film this year--even for those who read the novels! AND BELLA ARM WRESTLES A SUPER MUSCULAR VAMPIRE! AND WINS!!!!!! This shit was awesome and I loved every second of it.
MMI: Looper
Who saw Looper coming? If the trailer for Prometheus built-up my expectations for a mediocre movie, the trailer for Looper did the opposite. Looper’s trailer only showed parts of the story from the first one-third of the movie. If, like me, all you knew of the movie was from the trailers, this meant that when you got to the theater there was no fucking way you could possibly conceive of the thrill ride that was about to unfold. The movie spun me right round, baby, right round. I don’t even know what that really means, but I think it’s applicable. On the first viewing, the film is just cool. Cool dialogue. Cool scenes. Cool climax. Cool end. Bruce Willis is cool. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is cool. There’s cool things to debate with people about the movie. And I think the movie gets deeper on repeat viewings. When it ended, the first words out of my mouth were: “instant classic”. Yeah, I said that aloud, in the theater, to no one since I was by myself. And I’d say it again, too, myeah.
