Cinema Beans: Norwegian Wood
Norwegian Wood drove me banana sandwich for most of my viewing experience. For the life of me, I’ll never be able to Anh Hung Tran’s crazy shot selection. He comes in too close, hovers too far away. Slow zooms are juxtaposed with fast-moving horizontal pans. There’s this one scene with a first-person view? What the hell. The dude is even more distracting than David O. Russell. Then I guess it’s no coincidence that the film’s strongest scene is one free from flamboyance, and is instead an incredibly simple, claustrophobic moment where Tran employs a tight shot of Toru and Naoko having sex for the first time. It’s sexy for its passion, which is enhanced by such an intimate composition. And Naoko is hot. Maybe a little bit hotter because of the insanity? I don’t know. Toru dug it. And so did I. I’ll stop writing now.
MMI: Fun Size
Fun Size is pretty innocent. Then there's a sexy kitten Halloween costume. And Victoria Jackson's stockinged legs. That's fine. The "sexy meter" registers this: 1.2. Pretty innocent. Then there's a 30-sec boob grab. Where did that come from? Isn't this a Nickelodeon movie? Edgy, Nick. But it's still over-the-shirt cupping: 4.3. But wait, let's not forget a giant mechanical chicken that had been a monstrous advert/mascot for a fast food restaurant falls onto a car and humps it. That is not innocent. Nick is making an obvious sexual reference. And in case you're wondering, this is not sexy, unless you're into robo chickens making-it with automobiles (mechanirotica?). So in a movie that hasn't had much in the way of dialogue about flesh or fornication (as compared to say the scenes and conversations in American Pie, Superbad, or Sex Drive), that's had "sexy" and "sex" but on a pretty indirect and freshman level, I found Victoria Jackson's kissing technique insane. A 10. It was a foreshadow of all the adult stuff these kids are going to encounter and indulge in.
