Cinema Beans: The Tall Man
You have to be a sneaky little fuck to win in dodgeball. Not only do you need a cannon of an arm, but you've got to be able to dodge. In this sense, Pascal Laugier's The Tall Man creates an incredibly interesting and unique theme worth exploring, yet manages to dodge all of the constricting elements of such a theme. An underground kidnapping scene within the dead-end podunk of Cold Rock, Laugier never even creates the sense of entrapment necessary to depicting the dire state of the being children taken away. Remember: "Dodge, duck, dip, dive, and," once again, "dodge."
MMI: Skyfall
Skyfall has James Bond. Every other movie of 2012 doesn’t. But, if you need more of an argument. I don’t think any other 2012 movie had the athleticism of Skyfall. We saw a movie that changed locations, had an iconic character show off, crumble, re-assemble and show-off some more. Not only that, a franchise notorious for a lack of backstory investigated the past of its near-mythic main character. The cinematography was great. The action sequences were varied and well-done. The villain impressed the masses. The film even changed the status quo of supporting characters and HQ. Dynamic, dynamic film. How could it not win at dodgeball?
