Um, HELLOOOO, they’re in a blizzard! Duh. Next award please?
But in all seriousness, this movie is like being stuck in a snowstorm. The hopeful desire to escape, and the itching inevitability that you never will. Ottway may be a badass who rips apart wolves with his bare hands (and, according to the after-credits clip, may very well make it out alive), but the rest of his companions fall prey to the blistering snowscape one by one. They discuss their families, ponder over dead friends’ wallets, and yearn for a second chance once they’re re-released into the real world, but, come on let’s face it, it’s just not happening. The wolves are hungry and people aren’t meant to live in such harsh conditions. Except Liam Neeson. He was probably raised by wolves. Or bears. Or something else. But probably bears.

Blizzards suck and make you feel awful. The middle of Engagement is zero fun. Especially following the happiness and fun of the pre-Michigan scenes (summer!). Then things get sadder (fall into winter). When Blunt is flirting with her advisor and Segel is bearded and disgusting, my lord... The decomposition of the relationship, the break-up, the post-relationship sadness: it felt like being trapped inside because the external world is being ravaged by winds and ice. Except in the film the blizzard is both physical (winter in Michigan) and emotional. The movie really made me want a hug.
